Employment Lawyers and Legal Offices Employment lawyers focus on sections of the law that deal specifically with the rights guaranteed to employees within the United States’ legal system. Under the law, employees are guaranteed a great number of rights including the rights to a minimum wage, health and safety standards, protection from discrimination and protection from unfair termination. As such, employment lawyers principally deal with breaches of these rights. On individual bases, employment lawyers represent most workers’ compensation cases, work with clients to receive remuneration for unlawful termination, and ensure that wages owed to a worker are completely paid.
On a collective level, employment lawyers also work heavily with trade unions and other groups of employees in attempts to improve the payment and/or benefits offered by employers. Representing trade unions or a group of collectively wronged employees, employment lawyers help to achieve better pension and profit sharing plans, and also work that the employer follows through with these plans. Additionally, employment lawyers specialize in issues that relate to workplace discrimination and harassment, and work on both an individual and collective level to ensure that employees work in a just and fair workplace environment.
If you believe you have been unlawfully wronged by your employer or are entitled to benefit you have not received and would like to pursue legal reparations, an employment lawyer is likely the most skilled and appropriate lawyer to handle your case. If you are part of a union, you often have voided your ability to find a private attorney to represent your case, and are represented by the union. If this is the case, ensure that every legal avenue is pursued with the union and that they are competently handling your complaint. Often, after a union has represented their case to the best of their abilities, you will have an option to pursue it further on an individual basis if you are unsatisfied with the outcome. Employment lawyers are principally qualified based on experience, and familiarity with your line of work, and even employer, can be very helpful in achieving a successful claim.
